De-Bugging Bad Broadhead Flight
Question:
I need to be able to shoot about 40 yards to have a realistic chance of taking game this fall. My problem is that I am only accurate with broadheads to about 25 yards. I can shoot dead-on with field points though. I read a recent article in your magazine on broadhead flight but that only helped a little. That article talked about shooting groups, my arrows don’t have any consistency. What shall I try next?
Answer:
Whenever we hear that a bowhunter can’t hold groups with his broadheads the first thing we think of is alignment. If your broadheads aren’t perfectly aligned with the shaft you will get one arrow that planes off in one direction, while the next one planes off in the other direction. The culprit is nearly always poor quality inserts which don’t have a snug fit when installed in the shaft. Therefore, the broadhead ends up skewed. Replace your faulty inserts with some that press lightly into the shaft. Easton’s RPS inserts are good, as are those made by Saunders, to name only a couple. Test your hunting arrows for alignment by spinning them, or better yet, by observing them on an arrow spin tester.
