Arizona elk hunt report

Postby Keef on Tue Sep 22, 2009 3:33 pm

Well I just got back from 11 days of chasing elk. I'll write in more detail later today or Wednesday. It was unbelievable! I've never seen so many nice elk. I tagged a 12 point 345" bull yesterday with a 50 yard shot. Two guys, the Ulmer brothers, took 400" bulls. What a place.

I walked 6-8 miles everyday. Not bad for an old man. Today is my birthday so I got an early present.

Should have some pictures on Wednesday.

Where we made a blind overlooking a waterhole.

We had hunted this site once before and got into bulls. I had one at 5 yards, he was on one side of a bush, I was on the other and he bugled. Awesome. He was too small so we passed.

I changed guides after a few days and kept trying to think of the name of this waterhole (Bob's Tank) so I could get my new guide to go there. Finally he drove there one day to check it out and I recognized it. It had a lot of wallows so we built a blind and decided to hunt there. This bull came in with some cows and he headed to the water to wallow in the mud. It was fun to watch but it made me a nervous wreck. It was the worst case of buck fever I've ever had. It took forever before he offered a broadside shot at 50 yards. The arrow was a little back and got one lung and gut. He ran off 75 yards and laid down. After a while he moved 50 yards and laid down. A little later he did the same thing. I snuck close and put another arrow in him and he gave it up. If his fourth tine was not broken he would have scored 351, he lost 7" due to breakage.

He wasn't the biggest in the woods but he's my first bull, I've taken some cows but no bulls before this one. My goal was a 350 bull so I was very pleased.

My guides were great, the camp was excellent and the other hunters were very friendly. You couldn't ask for more. My hunt was schedluled for 7 days but the outfitter let me stay over and didn't charge me; how about that for being nice. I hope to do it again if I get drawn.

Man what a year so far, two record book animals. I'm living a dream and loving it. I thank God for the opportunity.
