Prussik Knot

Postby Jason on Thu Nov 12, 2009 12:17 pm

For those who don't know, attached is a video that explains the prussik Knot. It is very simple. It is not so much a knot as method of twisting a rope around your saftey rope (and then attaching it to your harness). If you fall, this "twist" cinches or bites the safety rope to hold you in place.

It is kept loose and slid up your safety rope as you ascend the tree or slid down the safety rope as you descend the tree. It should NOT be used in place of your safety attachement to the tree once you get in your tree stand.

IMPORTANT! In order for this to work well when ascending, it helps to have your safety rope also fastened at the bottom of the tree. It does not need to be that taught. The purpose is to make it easier to slide the prussik up the rope as you climb. If you can imagine, it would be very difficult to slide even a loose knot up a rope that is hanging freely.

Good idea, I need to start doing this. We all wear a harness in the tree, but in reality, probably 90% of the falls happen when getting into or out of the stand, before the harness is hooked up, not while you're sitting in them.
I laugh when you see the treestand safety video that shows the guy sitting in his stand and then he just tips out of it. I don't think so.
