Don't worry about it Coodster. . . . this info is awesome.

Here's what I'm doing right now. . .

I have a PSE Kingfisher recurve I bought in 2006 or so and set up for bowfishing. It has 40 lb limbs. Last night I took the AMS reel off, took off the roller rest, padded the shelf with moleskin. I'm taking it to my neighbor today to have the nock point changed to shoot off the shelf, and to see if he has any aluminum arrows that will work with it. He has buckets of used gear to choose from

I don't know anything about the arrows, or any of that, how to choose, etc. But I want to get some arrows and just start shooting. With this cheap bow, my goal is this. . .

If I can get to where I can hit a pie plate 8 of 10 times at 15 yards, I will break down and order something new and cool.

I've looked at Morrison, talked to the bowyer/owner at Tall Tines (over email), looked at Black Widow, etc.

I like the Morrisons and the TAll Tines

I think the Black Widows are kinda ugly.

One more question Coodster. . .

What is the difference in the riser lengths? Does that matter for shootability, etc., or is it just a preferential thing?

Check out this pic of Gene Wensel. . . that's the bow I want. Pretty sure that's a Morrison TD Cheyenne, with short riser, and canebrake skins. That's exactly what I want. Beautiful beautiful bow

And what's the difference in grips? Morrison has several different grip styles. I'm not sure what they mean

Good deal you have a bow that is a good weight thats a good start, It will get you shooting as soon as you can. Work on your form since you are comming from a compound it shouldnt be to far off and should have good form already.
You can get a flipper from NAP that will get you shooting also, or you will need to build up the shelf to the burger hole with JB weld (not the Nutter type JB that may get squishy on you lol, sorry nut gotta get my pokes in before you leave) may also need to build the side plate out also. wrap the area needing built out and up with saran wrap or tin foil to protect the riser and the JB will not stick to it, get the JB weld and start forming to the riser, once you have it about where you want, let dry, once dry file and shpe to exactly how you want, double side tape on the areas contacting the riser will hold it down good, then fuzzy velcro over the arrow contact areas. paint to the color of the riser to blend

To be honest I don't know alot about aluminum arrows, But a 600 spine carbon with 100 gr point will do well, start with a full length shaft, fletch a few and shoot tune with a bare shaft, I'm thinking with a 28" draw 29.5" 600 shaft with 100gr point will be real close but thats a guess, don't know your draw.. Anyhoo cut the bare shaft 1/4" at a time till bare shaft impact with your fletched. Eastons tuning guide is also great for recurves. I still refer to it.

Grips, think compound High med Low grips, if you shoot a high compuond grip you will do well with the same on a recurve, I personally like low grips, something you can do with the ILF risers is change the grips, if you have a bow shop that has a gamemaster or dorado if they let you shoot them great but feel the grips that will get you a refrence point to start with.

OHH Mr Morrison makes a beautiful bow, I have one of his mini 13 metal risers and its a SHOOTER. he does wonderfull work, he is the one who put my bull snake and rattle snake skins on my ILF limbs, not cheap by any means but I consider him one of the best.

Okay. You completely lost me on the jb weld for the shelf. I can't make anything. Here's a question. . . can I just put a whisker biscuit on it so that I can get shooting? I also dont' want to modify this bow too much. It will go back into the boat at some point for the bowfishing

I just want to start shooting soon. I've got the fever bad. I'd like to order a bow, but I want to see if this is something I can dedicate the time to. I know I will need to shoot really often. Which is easy. I've got 4 acres in the country. I can literally shoot off my front or back porch. My neighbor down the road has 6 big target butts set up too. Which will be nice when I'm starting.

If you have the itch that bad just pad the shelf and side plate area with some fuzzy velcro and go shoot some arrows but when it comes time for accuracy and consistent shot placement and tuning it will be way off

everything I will recomend you do will be reversable, nothing permanent and will be your fishing rig in a few min

Bake, I have been wanting to upgrade my son from his toy 12# recurve and fuse 25# compound to a more serious recurve. I was seriously leaning to the pse optima as a good starter but only will be able to get him up to 35# later down the road with the optima, so I went back and forth on which bows and took my own advise that I gave you.
Orderd him a 21" hoyt excel today 135$ for the riser and some cheap ILF limbs will be 90$ so he will have a solid platform to learn on.
Later in a year or so I will be able to upgrade those limbs for higher weight, so basically the bow will grow with him as he develops. So in a short 4 years from now he will be able to hunt with his recurve if he chooses to, And yes by that time he will have a legal hunting weight compound I am sure, but for now his draw is holding him back on the compound and don't want to jump him from 25# to 40# so the recurve will transition him up in weight till then.

Dad has a plan

Sounds like a good plan Coodster.

I took my recurve to my neighbor, who actually is putting an old style rest on it. I might have to hold it more upright with the rest. Oh well

I just want to shoot some. See if I like it. Before I drop a lot of coin on something expensive

I have a disease. . . I like nice things, and I'm incapable of of settling for something just to get by.

For example, I just bought my wife a new car. Her first new car, and the first car she's ever gotten for herself. She had been driving a Honda bubble car that her parents bought her in college. We went to a dealership and found the car, a GMC Acadia. We wanted AWD, and she wanted it fully loaded. I mean fully dang loaded. And she also wanted red. The first dealer couldn't find red. So we walked away, and I called 3 other dealers to find a red one. A week later, we had a red one. We weren't settling :D

I'm gonna shoot this PSE a while, and see how the wind blows. I may not order a recurve this year, maybe next. Depends on if I get drawn to go out west

Also. . . . While having my buck scored by a local measurer, he was telling me about a WY antelope hunt he's been on. It's a trespass hunt, and they set the blinds. 3 different ranches. $1,000. He's been 12 times, and killed 10 P&Y goats. SO I'm really thinking about doing that. If I do that, the ordering a Morrison will have to wait :D
