How would you hunt these scrapes?
Question:
Where I hunt I see quite a few big scrapes but never any big bucks, lots of small ones. Is it possible that the big buck is making these scrapes at night? How would you hunt these scrapes to tag the big guy that’s making them?
Answer:
Big scrapes aren’t necessarily made by big bucks. Repeated use by several different small bucks may produce a huge scrape even though there are no big bucks in the area. Look at track size in and around the scrape to help you determine if a large buck is using it. It sounds as if the scrape receives a lot of use, therefore the best way to hunt it for the biggest buck around is to place your stand downwind of it, in the nearest available thick brush. Also, since they don’t always stop to freshen a scrape, you may consider posting a heavily used travel route in the immediate area.
